RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate Course can be completed wherever it suits you; at work, at home or while you are travelling. When you register with Howellsail for the online course, you will receive a login and a password to the RYA Interactive site.
N.B. Upon completion of the online course you complete a short practical assessment which is easily arranged at a time and date to suit you.
DURATION: The course takes between 4 – 8 hours to complete online.

Course Aims
- The SRC radio operator qualification authorises the holder to operate a short range marine VHF radio with Digital Selective Calling (DSC) on a vessel and is a legal requirement for marine VHF users throughout the world
- Knowledge of what category of call to make. should you ever require assistance
PRACTICAL ASSESSMENT FOR YOUR LICENCE
Upon completion of the online course, you will need to take an assessment before you can be issued with a licence. This must be completed in person and must be carried out at an authorised RYA Training Centre. There is a £76 fee payable direct to the RYA for the assessment and processing of your licence.
The assessment takes approximately 1 hour. You will need to bring along a passport sized photograph of yourself, the RYA licence application form and your course completion certificate. A range of flexible venues are available for assessments, please contact us for advice.

In order to acquire an SRC VHF Certificate of Competence, you must meet the following requirements: Candidate must hold one of the following before attending an assessment.:
- RYA SRC Certificate of Classroom Course Completion OR
- RYA SRC Certificate On-line Course Completion
- Be a minimum age of 16 years of age
We also have reciprocal arrangements with some sailing schools around the UK, Gibraltar and the Canary Islands where having successfully completed the course online, you can arrange to carry out your VHF Assessment if you wish.
